How I Can Improve Communication Well how do I go about improving myself in communication competence? Communication in relationships could make or break that relationship. Depending on a variety of factors to be effective at communication, one has to rely on the areas of self-awareness to include personality, values, habits, needs and emotions. In using these to develop a better understanding of how we ourselves communicate with others. We will be analyzing the intercultural communication competence by looking at developing knowledge, motivation, and skills to improve my communication competence in intercultural communication. Starting with intercultural communication as being one of my areas of needed improvement. Being in the military there are a variety of different cultures that has to be dealt with on a daily basis. With communicating with other cultures, I think that there is a language barrier that sometimes gets in the way of effective communications between cultures. Being fr om America and thinking that our culture is ethnocentrism is creating a barrier to communicate effectively. Believing that if you live in America than you should be able to communicate in English effectively. Having effective communication codes to be able to understand what the other is trying to communicate without that message getting misinterpreted. Stereotyping others before we get to know the individual because they are from a different culture.
